The Trap of Being Wealthy and Disbelieved: Overconfident with Akhirah

Recently I stumbled upon few verses when reading the Qur’an. The verses mention there are some people who are wealthy and disbelieved in God, yet are very confident that they will also be rewarded well by God in the hereafter. I am wondering, where does this overconfidence come from? Should not these people be nervous about life in the hereafter after living this world with disbelief in God? These are some of the verses:

  • QS: 18: 35-36: “And he entered his garden, wronging himself, and said, “I think not that this will ever perish. Nor do I think that the Hour is imminent. And if I am brought back to my Lord, I shall surely find something better that thisin the Hereafter.”
  • QS 41: 50: ”And if we make him taste some mercy from Us after hardship has befallen him, surely he will say, “This is mine; I think not that the Hour will come. If I am returned unto my Lord, surely with Him shall I have that which is most beautiful”. So We shall inform those who disbelieved of that which they have done, and We shall cause them to taste of a grave punishment.”

As evident in the verses, there seems two traps here. First, when human beings receive a blessing or mercy from God, they say, This is mine; meaning something they feel they deserve because God is pleased with them; or that they feel there is no end to what they will be given. Second, by believing that they deserve what they receive from God, such individuals also believe that IF there is in fact a return to God, they will be among those who are rewarded, just as they were rewarded in this life.

Hence, there are two major sins that we can learn from these verses: First is pride and refusal to acknowledge God’s mercy. Second is doubt with the hereafter. The wealthy people are disbelieving and sinning through pride and their refusal to acknowledge that his provision comes from God. This delusion points to the moral error of “excessive hope in worldly things”, which entails being heedless of the impermanence of all created things and of one’s own morality. These people, with their great wealth, think that their wealth makes them immortal. Furthermore, the word “If I am brought back”, stress his overall doubt in the Hereafter or resurrection.

As an example, during Prophet era, a Makkan leader and idolater, Al-Ash bin Wa’il (father of Amr bin Ash), owed money to one of the Companion of the Prophet. When resurrection was mentioned to him in conjunction with a request that he repay his debt to the companion, Al-Ash mockingly replied that if he were indeed to be resurrected, he would be resurrected possessing wealth and children so would be able to repay his debt then.

The cause

So what could be the cause of this ironic behavior? I think the overconfident might stem from their belief that their wealth and good fortune belong to them on the basis of his own personal merit, rather than bestowed by God. Furthermore, since they assume that this merit transcends death, they also expect to enjoy wealth and children in the hereafter as well. In the QS 19:77, Allah SWT mentions, “Has you not considered the one who disbelieves in our signs, and says, “I shall be given wealth and children”. Also in QS 104:3: “Who amasses wealth and tallies it; supposing that his wealth makes him immortal

The irony

The verses also show that when these people have wealth, they will be ungrateful to Allah and disbelieving the akhirah, yet ironically, when bad things happen, they will call upon God sincerely. In QS 70:19-21: “Truly man was created anxious. When evil befalls him, impatient. And when good befalls him, withholding (it). So there seems to be pattern that the people were initially tested by Allah hence humbling themselves, yet when Allah gives them fortune, they become ungrateful. Despite this disbelief, what actually will happen in the hereafter is that God will inform them about their disbelief and will call them into account.

Finally, this theme reminds me of the concept of istidraj. Allah SWT mentioned: QS 6:44: “So then they forgot that whereof they had been reminded, We opened unto them the gates of all things, till, as they exulted in what they were given, We seize them suddenly, whereupon they came to despair.”

So here, we find the same pattern: they forgot that whereof they had been reminded; they forgot the lesson they should have learned from their misfortune and hardship, i.e. their utter dependency on God. Furthermore, they thought that they had been blessed and that their actions were therefore fair/good. In a hadits, Rasulullah SAW said, “When you see that God has given much to one of His servant in this world, despite his disobedience, it is only as a temptation”.

 Lessons learned

I think there are several lessons we can learn. First, let’s be aware of pride and overconfident in oneself. It is Allah who has power overall things. All of our achievements are due to him. Second, hereafter is real; we should not have doubt in it like the disbeliever. Third, we should realize that the circumstances that arise are from God and be content with them. We should be content with all that comes from God. Hence, when health and wealth are present, they should be expanded for the sake of seeking gain in the hereafter rather than gain in this life. Fourth, the alteration between hardship and ease should serve to deep our spirituality.

  • Let’s be at the center of the wheel of fortune, i.e. whatever happens in life should not change our belief in Allah. When we are at the top, we should not be too complacent and arrogant. Similarly, when we are at the bottom, we should not be in despair.
  • We need to be detached from adversity and prosperity in this world, avoiding both bitterness and self-satisfaction, and to engender an awareness that the variations of worldly life are merely a Divine test and do not necessarily reflect either Divine pleasure or dissatisfaction.

Finally, the fifth, let’s beware of istidraj/good fortune despite our many sinful actions.

Karena Cinta

We live in this world because we love Allah SWT. He has the power over everything. He created us. He gave us sustenance. He’s our auliya, the one who always protect us.

This beautiful song from Maher Zain, may Allah swt protects him and his family, is a good description of how kind and loving Allah SWT has been for us. May our eyes remain open to see it.

What du’a is more beautiful than Prophet Yusuf a.s. du’a?

“My Lord! You have indeed bestowed on me of the sovereignty, and taught me the interpretation of dreams; The (only) Creator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Wali (Protector, Helper, Supporter, Guardian, etc.) in this world and in the Hereafter, cause me to die as a Muslim (the one submitting to Your Will), and join me with the righteous.” (Q.S. Yusuf: 101)

Sudahkah kita berikan diri kita pada Allah SWT sebagaimana mestinya? I’m worry for the horrible time when my thoughts are far away, deluded away from worshiping Allah SWT. What a miserable state I would be in; yet I won’t realize it. May Allah SWT always gives his mercy and guides. No other option than to make it through.

Dari Dunia Menuju Akhirat (part 1)

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

A.  First thing first

First thing first. Syaikh Murattib Al-Hajj mengingatkan, “and what is a man other than a comet which flashes brilliant light only then be reduced to ashes”.

Lalu apa itu kesuksesan? Bagaimana agar kita menjadi seorang yang sukses? Apakah ukurannya adalah banyaknya harta? Gelar?

Kata ‘shaleh’ memiliki akar kata Shod-Lam-HA, yang berarti “to be right/good/honest/upright/sound righteous, suit, fit. Dari akar kata ini muncul: Aslaha – to set things aright, reform, do good. Saalihat: good works, fit and suiting deeds. Aslaha (vb. 4) to make whole sound, set things right, effect an agreement between, render fit. Islaah: uprightness, reconciliation, amendment, reformation. Muslihun: reformer, one who is upright, righteous, a person of integrity, peacemaker, suitable.”

Kata khusyuk memiliki akar kata Kha-Syin-‘Ain yang berarti “Lowly/humble/submissive, still and low, to lower the eyes or voice, sink/nearly disappear in a setting place, be eclipsed/go away, become lean, whither/dry up, feign lowliness/humility in demeanour or voice or eyes, eject a thing, bow or bend down the head and body, be fearful”.

Kata laghwu memiliki akar kata Lam-Ghoin-Waw, yang artinya “To talk nonsense speech, to make mistake consciously or unconsciously, use vain words, idle talk, make noise and raise a hue and cry (to interrupt), talk frivously (to drown the hearing of another), a slip in talk, unintentional talk, babble”. May Allah swt protect us from that state. To turn away, back, slide; or having an excuse”.

To preserve/guard/protect a thing, take care of a thing, prevent a thing from perishing, to be careful/mindful/regardful/attentive/considerate concerning a thing, to keep a thing,…, to remember, to defend, keep a thing from getting lost, to be observant or watchful, apply oneself/assiduously/constantly/preservingly, vigilant or heedful, to anger a preson or be anger”.

This worldly life summarized in five words

Like many other people, I very often ask myself, what is this life really about? Why are we here? How to be a successful one? And so on. In looking for this answer, I am very grateful that I am in touch with Al-Qur’an, the only book which consists of literal word of God possessed by human being nowadays. In surah (chapter) Al-Hadid ayah (verse) 20, Allah swt summarized this worldly life in five words. The verse read:

“Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children..”

I’ve read this verse many many times before, but I didn’t really catch the meaning and get the sense of it. Only now, thanks to a good Android app called Qamus alAthar, I can get the meaning of five Arabic words that Allah used in that verse. Arabic is such a beautiful, detail, comprehensive, and deep in meaning language; no wonder why Allah swt chose it as the language of the final revelation. In my experience, merely relying on the ‘common’ translation that we read in our Qur’an will result in lost in meaning as well as lack of understanding. In Qur’an, Allah swt repeatedly asked us to think deeply, over and over again on the ayah of the Qur’an. Only through this exercise we will realize how powerful the Qur’an’s message is. Without further ado, here are the words.

First is la’ibun. The root letter for this word is la-‘a-ba; which means: “played/sported/gamed/jested/joked, pastime (in an unserious thing), engage in idle sport without meaning of purpose, slaver/drivel, stupid/fool.” Looking at this meaning, I internalize the word la’ibun as engaging in something that is not meaningful or purposeful. By internalizing it like this, I personally can see the connection between this word and the reality of life that I observe. In academic world, for example, I’ve seen many people engage in research, which can take almost his entire career, in something that is not meaningful or have no meaning. In Economics for example, we usually try to model human behavior in a very complex mathematical model. Many people have spent most of their career in this field; but then suddenly, when the financial crisis come, unfortunately, these people came to an obvious conclusion, that we can’t model human behavior as a mathematical equation. The reason? Simple. Because we’re human; we’re not an apple who will subject to gravity force when it falls from the tree. Sorry for making it too Economics; but many Economists, they spent most of their life working on this mathematical model which then result in the state of Economics field whereby a good economist is not someone who can provide the most wisdom; rather, it’s the one who can produce the most sophisticated mathematical modelling regardless its relevance to the real world. Again, the point is engaging in something that is not meaningful or purposeful. I believe this phenomenon could be found in other branches of science or other life setting.

Second is lahwun. The root letter for this word is la-ha-wa; which means: “Become diverted from it as to forget it, to preoccupy, beguile, distract, sport/play/amusement, divert, diversion, forget, delight/cheer, turn away, what is thrown, unmindful/careless.” My personal take on this word is that this worldly life is something that will distract, divert, and preoccupy us from worshipping Allah. This is entirely true. We are a living witness of how we and many people are heavily occupied with our daily activities and ambition that we forget our obligation to Allah. Even many Muslim do not observe the five daily prayers, which is basically the minimum standard that we should abide to.

Third is zinatun. The root letter for this word is za-ya-na; which means: “To adorn, deck. Adorn, grace, honor. Adorned, ornamented, decorated, decked, beautified. A grace, a beauty, a comely quality, a physical/intellectual adornment, an honor or a credit, and anything that is the pride or glory of a person or a thing. It [states] are three kinds: Mental: such as knowledge/science and good tenants. Bodily: strength, tallness of stature, beauty of aspect. Extrinsic: wealth, rank or station, dignity.” As we can see, this is a very rich word; and amazingly, it describe vividly the life that we are seeing in our environment. We clearly witness how people around us, or even ourselves, are obsessed with adornment or beauty. The cosmetic, fashion, fitness, etc. are a massive industry. Many people are so obsessed with how they look that they even risk their life for plastic surgery, pay USD 500 just for a branded slipper, and so on. Alhamdulillah that Allah guides us that this is not the right way to go. Again, I should mention a caveat here. This does not mean that Islam wants us to look ugly, dirty, and smell. No. Allah mentioned that what we have in this world, such as pearl, gold, silk, fur, etc. are bounty from Allah. Islam teaches us to look good, smell well, clean, etc.; but what Islam strongly forbid us is to be excessive in doing this. I saw a (branded) slipper priced at USD 500 in Singapore Takashimaya mall. Without a doubt, this brand-worshipper behavior is what we shouldn’t be trapped in.

Fourth is tafaakhurun. The root letter is fa-kha-ra; which means: “Self-glorification/magnification, boast, to disdain/scorn, proud/haughty, long/tall/great, excellent quality, baked pottery/clay, earthen vessel.” This is again very commonly found in our life, isn’t it? A good example for this can be found in Qur’an surah Al-Kahfi ayah 32 to 43. Please take a look.

Fifth is takaatsurun. The root letter is ka-tsa-ra; which means: “To surpass in number in quantity, increase, multiply, happen often, copious, richness; to be much, many, numerous, a man whose ancestors are many or whose good deeds are many. A man possessing much good, river in paradise from which other rivers flow, talkative person.” As we can see, this word does not necessarily imply a negative thing, but what make it negative is what follows in the ayah, i.e. takaatsurun fil amwali wal aulaad; which means surpassing each other in terms of wealth and children. Again, this is very true and easy to spot in our life. Regardless whether it is a President or a gardener, human tends to surpass each other in terms of the quantity of their wealth as well as the (quantity and) quality of their children.

We should be really grateful to Allah swt for showing us things that we should be mindful of in this life. Allah swt then continue the ayah with an even more amazing lesson. Take a look to the continuation of the ayah below.

“…like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.”

flower-377744_640Allah swt then beautifully give parable for this worldly life. Allah said this worldly life is like a plant which grows due to rain; but then the plant won’t stay beautiful and strong forever. Slowly but surely, unstoppable, the plant will someday turn yellow; and what remains? It just scatters as debris. Subhanallah. This is a very deep lesson for us. No matter how beautiful we are, no matter how smart, strong, wealthy, etc., at some point in time, we’ll just like a plant, we’ll get old and dies. But, unlike plant, our life does not stop here; in fact, the real life has just begun. Prophet Muhammad saw once said, when a human is brought to his grave, three things follow him; but two will go back and one remains. The three things are his family, his property, and his deeds. Family and property will go back, while his deeds will remain with him. This is should be a very strong reminder for us to increase our good deeds before it’s too late.

Allah swt conclude the ayah with the following.

“And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.”

That’s basically conclude this deep and powerful ayah. This life is nothing but a delusionary enjoyment. It may seems enjoyable, but it’s just a delusion. What is true or real is the life in the hereafter. It will be a constant punishment for the disbeliever and an eternal mercy for the believers. May we are among those winners.

Finally, this verse gives many insight to us. To be a successful person in this life and in the hereafter, we better watch out not to fall into the trap of this five words. In doing so, I think we must not:

  1. Engage in un-meaningful and un-purposeful activities. Let’s always ask ourselves before doing something; is this activity really meaningful and purposeful? If so, what’s the purpose?
  2. Being preoccupied with something such that we are diverted or distracted from worshipping Allah swt. This obviously does not mean we can’t do our work, have a career, and then be in Masjid for the whole day. No, it’s quite the contrary, actually. Islam ask us to spread in the earth, looking for Allah’s bounty; but, there is a key principle here, that is we do it only for Allah’s sake and we are continuously aware of Allah’s presence.
  3. Being obsessed to be adorned, either mentally, physically, and extrinsically.
  4. Being boastful.
  5. Surpassing with each other in terms of wealth and children. There is nothing wrong with being wealthy and have a lot of smart children; again, what is highlighted here is being obsessed with and preoccupied to achieve whether we are in the list of 100 richest people in community.

To conclude, I hope from this moment on, whenever we see a blossoming flower, we would be reminded that this world is just like this flower; like it or not, it will come to an end; and the real life will then begin. Wallau’alam bisshawab.

The Secret Recipe: Al-Qur’an

Alhamdulillahirabbil’alamin, all thanks to Allah who has instilled guidance in our heart. In this moment I would like to assert one ni’mah (blessing) that Allah has given to our life. What is it? It is the Al Qur’anul Kariim. Here are some description of Qur’an by Allah. I really hope, after reading this description we would be more eager to interact with, memorize, understand, and practice Al-Qur’an.

  • Al-Qur’an is the book in which there’s no doubt in it; it is the guidance for those who fear Allah. Allah said, “This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.” (QS 2:2).
  • Al-Qur’an is the book which assert the previous books; as the guidance as well as delivering good news to the believers. Allah said, “by permission of Allah , confirming that which was before it and as guidance and good tidings for the believers.” (QS 2:97).
  • Al-Qur’an is the law by which we decide our affairs. Allah said, “Indeed,  We  have  revealed  to  you,  [O  Muhammad],  the  Book  in  truth  so  you  may  judge between  the  people  by  that  which Allah has  shown  you.  And  do  not  be  for  the  deceitful an  advocate.” (QS 4:105).
  • Al-Qur’an is a clear light which shows the right path. Allah said, “O  mankind,  there  has  come  to  you  a  conclusive  proof  from  your  Lord,  and  We  have sent  down  to  you  a  clear  light.” (QS 4:174).
  • Al-Qur’an is the lesson; healing for what inside our heart; guidance and rahmat for the believers. Allah said, “O  mankind,  there  has  to  come  to  you  instruction  from  your  Lord  and  healing  for  what is  in  the  breasts  and  guidance  and  mercy  for  the  believers.” (QS 10:57).

These are several description from Allah swt on Al-Qur’an. As long as we try to be closer to Allah with Qur’an and sincerely look for guidance, insyaallah, insyaallah Allah will give us the guidance.

Saya hanya ingin mengingatkan diri saya.

Economics and its discontent

Just recently listened to a lecture by one of my favorite economist, Professor Jefferey Sachs, on economics and theology. There are  couples of interesting reflections that he delivered.

First, the issue nowadays is between morale and material pursuits. Not long ago, he said, economics study was taught under the moral or philosophy subject. Yet, since the 19th century, I guess since the start of industrial revolution, the moral side has been abandoned. As the result, many of our problem nowadays is not on economics  issue (such as optimization), rather, it’s a morale question. He took an example of the difficulty of a senior health organization officials in securing financial support from the white  house for a global health project. The fund raising has been very very difficult even though the amount is only 1% of 1% of US economy, or equivalent to what Pentagon spend everyday.

Second, he cited Easterlin paradox, that is a paradox between happiness and material well-being. Professor Easterlin found that even though the wealth of american since 1950 to 1980 has increased, their (reported) happiness has remained unchanged. Thus this puts deep question on the material pursuit that we’re on.

Lastly, he cited how the material pursuit of human being has destroyed the nature at unprecedented level; and this destruction has brought considerable change to our lives, yet people aren’t care about it.

As an economist wanna be, I think this reflection should be well-noted. Professor Sach has the credibility to make such reflection, as he is one the greatest economists at the moment. It is somehow sad for Professor Sach and the people alike to finally come to this sort of conclusion, something that Muslim has taken it for granted. As a muslim, we has been taught that life in this world shouldn’t be based on material pursuit. We’ve been taught that we have to protect and sustain the nature, rather than to destroy it. We have been taught to spend zakat, charity, waqaf and other forms of givings to reduce poverty and inequality. But I guess it’s easier to say rather than practiced. We know that material pursuit, destruction on nature, inequality among people are bad things. Yet, we’re still on the blind eye to pursue it. I believe this is the test that Allah specifically designed for us who live in 21st century, when the temptation to worldly life is just irresistible.

This, I believe, should be reflected in Indonesia’s economy. We’re currently maybe in the most booming period of our country economy. I believe we should stop and ask, is this really what we want? Is destroying nature, exposing our lives to endless material pursuit, and widening inequality the one that we really want?

Prof Sach ended his speech by stressing that economics is (and should) not (be) a pure science. It should be combined with morale philosophy again. I wish he will get hidayah soon and understand that the true morale guidance can only be found in Islam, the final cut of Ibrahamic religion. May we’re not included in those who know the truth but do nothing to follow it.

It’s just never enough to thank Allah

Alhamdulillah, all praises and thanks to Allah, the lord of the world; the one who has created us and this entire life. How I really feel that thanking Allah will just never enough; too many ni’mat that Allah has given to us. May we always be someone who always remember the ni’mat from Allah and are able to maximize it. May we also be someone who feel very dependent on Allah; yet at the same time understand that we have to work hard in all aspects in this life. May Allah always guide us in this life, to be someone who has big ‘amal (ahsanu ‘amala).

Best wishes for your activities!

Kita cinta misalnya pada A, kenapa?

Wassalamualaikum,,

So happy with QS Muhammad

I have a quite special feeling with Qur’an, surat Muhammad. I am so happy to read it, and again, so happy to read it. Just wanna put several verses that I like.

[1] Those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah – He will waste their deeds. [2] And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad – and it is the truth from their Lord – He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition. [3] That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allah present to the people their comparisons.

[10] Have they not traveled through the land and seen how was the end of those before them? Allah destroyed [everything] over them, and for the disbelievers is something comparable.

Somehow I think the verse number [10] above is an encouragement from Allah to us to travel and to see the impact that we’ll get if we disobey Allah. There are many civilizations ended up destroyed because of their disobedient to Allah.

[11] That is because Allah is the protector of those who have believed and because the disbelievers have no protector.

Here Allah stressed that He is our protector. When I read this verse, I feel so safe and peaceful.

Here are some other verses that interest me:

[19] So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place.

[24] Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?

[29] Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allah would never expose their [feelings of] hatred?

[30] And if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would know them by their mark; but you will surely know them by the tone of [their] speech. And Allah knows your deeds.

[31] And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allah ] and the patient, and We will test your affairs.

[35] So do not weaken and call for peace while you are superior; and Allah is with you and will never deprive you of [the reward of] your deeds.

[36] [This] worldly life is only amusement and diversion. And if you believe and fear Allah , He will give you your rewards and not ask you for your properties.

Hopefully we’ll always be close to Allah and can read and memorize His Qur’an,,

Around ten days ago, I finally turned 22 years old. Sounds like very old. Sometimes, it freaks me =). I would like to thanks Allah, as always, for everything that He has given to me.

I’m just fully recovered from three days-unusual sick that I’ve never experienced before. I just realized that, after that three days, I feel that I am  closer to Allah, I more understand how dependent I am to Allah. How Allah is everything in my life. Thank you Allah.

Last year, a lot of amazing things happened. Started with my role as advisor to FSI FEUI, which made more involved heavily in da’wah in FEUI. Then more things happened: won several essay competitions, mapres fe, mapres ui, accepted in LKYSPP with full scholarship, MTQ mahasiswa in Makassar, mapresnas, and of course graduation. Too many reasons to be grateful to Allah.

As what I did a year ago when I turned 21, I promised my self that I have to continue to work hard, improve my self, and continue contributing greatly to people around me and to Indonesia at large. I hope this year I can represent Indonesia in International forum, awarded as one of world future leader, and advising Indonesia’s government. I will also really try to finish memorizing qur’an this year.

The spirit that I have maintained, that is to be someone greatly beneficial to others, amazingly, have kept me on so far. Again, all thanks to Allah.

Lastly, for all of things that I’ve achieved so far, I would like to give tribute to mom, the extraordinary woman. The one who always pray for me. My mom, is everything for me. Mom, hope Allah will place us together and all of our family in His jannah later. I love you more than myself.

You Rise Me Up

To my parent, family, ustadz, teachers, best friends, and friends,, thank you for everything. You made me to the stage where I am today. Hope Allah always gives us strength, to be and to do a good thing. Hope Allah gathers us all in His jannah later.

Thank you all,,

Woman In Islam

I just watched a very interesting documentary entitled Miss Representation. The documentary is about the perception on woman in society. In society, mostly woman are seen just based on their “body”, not on their “brain”. In the documentary it is said that around 78% of woman are unsatisfied with their body when they are 17 and the number of girls and woman who are stress has been doubled from 2000 to 2010.

The more horrifying fact is that this media (film, magazine, advertisement) are really affect girl in their growth age when they are seeking for identity. It is unquestionable why the number of woman who want to be a president or other top officials is decreasing when they are get older. They are just shown that those positions are not their destiny or in another words they are just incapable of.

I think It proved how actually Islam-who is always accused of humiliating woman right- has help woman. Islam teach that the body of woman is not for ‘public consumption’. Islam teach woman to cover their body so that they will be protected from irresponsible men or from people concern about their body look. Islam also teach woman how to behave, for example by being straight in talking, do not use sexually attractive voice, etc. to their ‘non mahram’.

There is no solution for the current problem in our society other than woman have to dress and behave properly. There is no way we can change men perception on woman as ‘sexual fulfilling doll’ if the woman do not stop to dress sexy or to be perceived sexy. We can’t deny that actually woman it self is the one who make they are un-respected. the way they dress, they way they walk or behave is most of the time in order they are looked or perceived attractive by man.

If all woman cover their body and behave properly, then automatically there will no sexy woman picture in media, then of course, the image that woman is ‘sexual fulfilling doll’ will disappear by itself.

Our Role for the Earth

In qur’an, there is a story when Allah was about creating human as the khalifah or leader in the earth. Allah said to the angel, “Verily, I am going to place (mankind) generations after generations on earth.”  then the angel said, “Will You place therein those who will make mischief therein and shed blood, – while we glorify You with praises and thanks and sanctify You. Then Allâh said: “I know that which you do not know.”

I found this ayat (verse) as a very interesting verse. Angels already know what we’re going to do in the earth, that we will make mischief in this beautiful earth. And yes, it’s true, we polluted the water, air, and land, killed the endangered animal, cut down trees, and many other bad things.

I believed Allah definitely also already know about it. But the fact that Allah said “I know that which you do not know.”, give impresion to me that Allah trust us, as human being, to do a good thing in this earth.

I am so grateful to have a grandfather who taught me about philosophy of nature. With his kindness, he taught me about how we, as human being, have to nurture this earth, create balance in this world, do a good thing to all human being and all of Allah’s creation. He taught me to be nice to everyone, animals, plants, and everything.

With all of the technological advancement, we, human being, successfully ‘create’ a good species of plant, like a sweet mango, more rice in paddy, etc. I believe that this is a good thing and we have to keep doing it. But the fact that we polluting and destroying everything on the land, sea, and sky, we’ve got to stop it.

Yes, life is balance, require balance, and ‘ve got to be balanced. Let’s try to execute Allah’s trust to us, to govern this earth well.

3 Lessons

There are three main lesson that I got in several last days.

first, the important of hard work, pray, and tawakkal.

One measure of our maturity is our patience on our own wants. Most of the time, we pray to Allah to give us this and that. After we work hard to achieve it, just give it all to Allah. He will determine the result. However, sometimes, or maybe many times, we are inpatient to know the result or when we know the result.

Let’s believe, that insyaallah, when we didn’t get what we want, Allah is preparing a better thing for us. Allah said, when we pray, there are three possibilities. First, Allah will give what we want directly; second, Allah will postpone it for some reasons, and will give it to us later; or third, Allah think that’s not good for us and he give us reward for already pray to him. Here, we can see that there is no loss for us to pray to Allah. To conclude, let us always work hard, pray, and then just give the rest to Allah, he will determine the best for us.

Second, The past is the past. We can do nothing about it. Don;t be bother with what had happened in the past. Allah give us another opportunity. Take the lessons. It’s all about our choice, what we wanna do and what we wanna be right now. Let’s be someone who focus and optimist.

Lastly, about our own ability.

We’ve got to move forward, create value  added and strive for the society’s prosperity. A lot of people put their hope on our shoulders. We are the selected one. Not many people have or talent and ability. Let’s keep do the best, keep be the best, and make them happy. Make those unfortuned people have smile and hope on their eyes. It’s our task, our main task.

Insyaallah, Allah will always be with You

When you made a mistake, trust me, it’s fairly OK. Everyone made a mistake. Just promise that you’ll never do it again. And the most important thing, now you have to run faster to catch up. Gonna be hard. But it’s possible.

Why did you bury yourself in the sadness, while there are hopes in this life? Only to Allah you will back. He is the one who know you. He is the only one. He knows what your heart meant. You are lucky, even very lucky to be in this religion, maximize it. Insyaallah, Allah will always by your side.

Just Another Reflection

August 12th, on Lion Air flight to Jakarta from Singapore

First, Alhamdulillah, we got some good and professional government official. It has to be strengthened.

Second, there are around 31 million Indonesian live under USD 1.5 a day. All of parents in that 31 mio people always hope and dream that their children and edscents could live a better life. One key thing to achieve that, if not the one and only, is education. That’s why our main job is to provide a good quality but at the same time accessible to most of Indonesian. Several potential saving available is that through:

1) Making sure that government procurement, at leaat in ministrry of education, are as efficient as possible. There many cases, reports, and facts shown many leak in this procurement. Could we imagine if the corrupted money is used to build more school or library?

2) The ‘stay in luxurious hotel” tradition of government official has to be erased. If we can’t deliver this country’s promises to most of its citizen, that is to lift up their living standard, then why we (government official) live extravagantly?

One key thing that I always aspire in this country is that if only we have a good library. I’m so keen to see how Indonesia’s libraries are more crowded that shopping mall as it is today. Then, we’ve got to start to build an amazing library, put more books, provide internet access, etc. I believe, reading, or education in broad sense, is the key to get out from poverty.

Last point that I want to address quickly is how we need a more affordable and widely available higher education. We, of course, never intend to let our country become a resource based economy country, instead of knowledge based, that’s why, again, education should be a higher priority.

Jihad Seorang Mahasiswa

Rasulullah Muhammad SAW sangat mendorong kegiatan menuntut ilmu.

Isaac Newton pernah mengatakan, “If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giant”.

Turning 21 in 21st Century

More mature, more achievements, and much closer to Allah. That’s the tagline for this year. Alhamdulillah, I started this 21 yo by praying tahajjud. Thank you Allah, for giving that ni’mat.

When I take a look to Islam’s heroes, most of them become a leader and write an amazing history in their 21. I also has to be as mature and as competent as them.

I really hope that I can contribute more to Indonesia this year ahead. Allah, I pray and beg you to make me become a great person. Just like prophet Muhammad, my idol. I love him really much. Ya Allah, please make the best character can be found deep inside me.

I love you Allah. That’s all. You’re the best and the only one for me. You’re the one who always supports me. You’re the place where I can cry on. You’re the place to hold when I’m so afraid and down.

Allah, thank you for the special present this morning. When I open the qur’an, I found QS Al-Mu’minun: 1-11. That was the best present I’ve ever had. I’ll always try to make myself close to you. Allah, no one can replace you in my heart. Allah, I’ll be here, always for you. Thanks Allah.

Jika kita melihat lingkup internasional, seperti lembaga World bank atau PBB.

Ilmu pengetahuan mendorong pada research and development.

Several Last Day of Ramadhan

Today is the last two days of ramadhan. I don’t know why, but I just feel so sad. I feel something worth will leave me. If I take a look into my ramadhan this year, maybe it is the worst ramadhan that I ever had. I feel so unsatisfied with what I have done. Now, I only can regret my self, hoping next year I can meet it again and can maximize it’s present.

I remember Rasulullah said that who met ramadhan but when ramadhan passed his sins still not forgiven then he really a poor guy. I’m afraid that I’m included in that group. Allah, thank you for letting me meet ramadhan this year. Thank you for every great things that you have given me. Your love is unlimited and uncounted to me. I am ashamed to you Allah. How can I still live and step on your earth, but I  don’t put you on top of my mind every second. Forgive me Allah. I’ll try to be a great muslim from now on. Forgive me Allah.

Effort and Pray

What are the things that we have to do in order  improving our capabilities? For me, nothing else except effort and pray. This two things like a two side of coin, can’t be separated.  Don’t ever dream that we can be a great person without a big effort, and also don’t ever confident that you will be an amazing person without permission or willingness of Gods.

In our daily life maybe we can see a lot of success people which do not believe in God. If we take a deeper look, they are not happy, because the eternal happy is only when we close to God and can be beneficial for the society.

Based on this understanding, I’ll always  perform my best effort and make my own self closer with God. At the mean time, I’ll always try to make people around me realize and do the same even better thing.

Pentingnya Amal Unggulan

Sudahkah kita memiliki suatu amalan unggulan? Ada sangat banyak pilihan bagi kita semua, misalnya selalu berinfak setiap hari, atau tak pernah bolong membaca ma’tsurat, selalu shalat dhuha, dll.

Saudara ku, sudahkah kita memiliki amalan unggulan? Wallhu’alam Bisshawab.
