Syaikh Hamza Yusuf (SHY) is one of my favorites ulama. I’ve learned a lot from him. Even though he is a convert to Islam, his knowledge and contribution to Islam, I think, is more than thousands of present-day Muslims’ combined. This e-book (Transcript of Lectures by Syaikh Hamza Yusuf) is the collection of SHY’s lectures transcript. I hope you get benefit from it as much as I have been.
We are building for akhirah. Everything we do is the preparation for akhirah. We ought to utilize whatever strength or potential that Allah swt gave us as a way to have long lasting amal sholeh. We surely indeed can’t afford to be the loser in akhirah. Prophet Musa’s du’a regarding potential is an excellent example: “My Lord! Truly, I am in need of whatever good that You bestow on me! (QS 28:24)
Jangan pernah setengah hati dalam bekerja. Jika sedari awal sudah tercetus hanya ingin melakukan ‘seadanya saja’, then leave it!
Kita umat yang terbaik; kita hanya pantas melakukan dan menghasilkan yang terbaik.
Most of the time, the main issue is not the lack of knowledge; rather it’s the lack of discipline to act on that knowledge. I’ve never think that Indonesia and many other developing countries are underdeveloped due to the lack of knowledge of proper policy; rather, I believe it’s because of the lack of good governance.
It’s as simple as thinking like our own affairs. A successful person is a discipline, ‘goodly governed’ person. We can’t expect someone to be a good artist, farmer, teacher, or merchant, without being discipline to their own. A developed country is the accumulation of a developed individual.
Where are our position in the companion of Rasulullah SAW? Will we be eligible to meet him and be with him later in akhirah? The companions of Rasulullah SAW had struggled with Rasulullah SAW in a way that we might not be even dare to do it today. Where are our position in the eyes of Rasulullah SAW? Unless we follow his path and continue his mission, we would remain far away from him. Let’s raise the rhythm.
When Rasulullah SAW was sent by Allah SWT more than 1400 years ago, the people around him was in jahiliyah state; they worshiped idols, wealth, status, etc. Nowadays, the world is definitely in a much modern state, yet the state of the time is still the same as 1400 years ago. People still worship idols, wealth, status, etc. What a progress that Islam had made since the revelation of Qur’an until the set back which then brought the world back to the jahiliyah state.
Realizing this, we should be aware that our life mission is definitely to continue this message (risalah). We may live in a different set of time with Rasulullah SAW; but our life mission is unchanged; we live to spread the tauhid, that is there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad is his messenger. Thus, we may be a doctor, an economist, an accountant, merchant, farmer, etc., but still, our main role is da’i, i.e. those who call for tauhid. Let’s not be deceived by Syaithan with worldly orientation which will separate us away from Allah swt and our life mission.
Bacalah dan tadabburilah Al-Qur’an. Perbanyaklah waktu bersama Al-Qur’an; insyaallah hati akan menjadi tenang. Mu’min yang diberi ketenangan (sakinah) oleh Allah tidak akan takut dengan apa yang akan terjadi esok hari dan tidak akan sedih dengan apa yang telah terjadi.
Let the life flow. It’s meant to be enjoyable; only, and if only with Him.
Tarikan dunia itu begitu kuat. I only want closeness to Allah as my indicator of success.
Insyaallah, as long as we are willing to learn, we’ll be able to master it. One of the biggest tragedies is when someone undermine the important of knowledge. I firmly believe, if our people, Indonesian, can be more educated, insyaallah, Indonesia have a bright future ahead. So, for all of us who get this great opportunity to learn, it is clearly very ungrateful if we are not serious in it. May Allah strengthen us and rewards this effort with Jannah. Salam,
Sudah sepantasnya kita dekat dengan Al-Qur’an dan memahami isinya. Al-Qur’an adalah the ultimate guidance in our life. Semoga kita bisa konsisten mempelajari dan mengamalkannya.
Innovation doesn’t necessarily happen only in science and technology field. Innovation can be done in many areas of our life. It could be as simple as a mother who innovate in the dinner menu. World will (only) be a better place with innovation. So, what innovation would you embark on?
Has our democracy resulted a leader who has the vision for development? A leader who does not live extravagantly before its people become prosperous. Why unperformed leader can be elected for the second term? Are we lack of capable people or are our too dumb so that they elected a bad one? There must be something wrong with our democracy, or maybe, there’s something wrong with democracy itself.
